What is Aluminum Oxide Used For?
Aluminum oxide is used in abrasive blast equipment to remove rust and other debris from the surface of an object. Because aluminum oxide uses are so numerous, brown aluminum oxide is probably the most popular abrasive blast media.
Aluminum Oxide Properties
Its overall characteristics combine to make it highly efficient and reusable. Because of these properties, it is used for etching, paint removal, and preparing surfaces for re-coating. Additionally, its angular shape performs well when removing heavy foreign matter and quickly cutting stone. In addition to these, it is angular in shape, hard, dense and extremely fast cutting. Thus it can be reused several times before discarding. Finally, brown aluminum oxide is also available in a variety of grits.
Aluminum Oxide Hardness
Aluminum Oxide (Brown) has a hardness of approximately 9 on the Mohs Scale. In comparison, sand has a Mohs Scale number of 6. Brown Aluminum Oxide’s hardness makes it a good all around abrasive for quickly removing surface debris.
Aluminum Oxide Density
The density of brown aluminum oxide is approximately 3.87 g/cm3.
Aluminum Oxide Safety
The abrasive blasting process is dangerous. When done with appropriate precautions, it is one of the most efficient ways to remove surface debris from an object. Always take your personal safety very seriously. Aluminum Oxide Health risks exist and you need to be aware. As a result of the risks, we encourage you to always understand your risks. Here are some links that could provide information. The first describes abrasive blasting safety and the second is a link to our Aluminum Oxide MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet).
Also, we have a very detailed abrasive media page here. It describes many abrasive media properties to help you learn more about abrasive media. When you are ready to purchase, you can call or email us and we can assist. If you have any further questions we are ready to help you.
Health and Safety WARNING
Throughout our site we use the term sandblasting or some variation. We use the word “sand” because it is a familiar term to our customers. However, the word sandblasting is as old as the industry itself, and refers to the sand used decades ago. Most importantly, there are many dangers with actual sand in blasting. Too many in fact to list. Above all, we advise against using ANY SAND in your cabinet or blasting process – ever. Read more about why we take this approach.
NEVER use silica sand or any silica based media in ANY blast cabinet. We offer a broad variety of abrasive blast media specific for your project. Exposure to this silica is known to causes severe and often fatal damage to lung tissue. Therefore, DO NOT ever use silica sand in abrasive blast equipment. Again, we simply DO NOT recommend using sand in a “sandblasting” cabinet – there are too many safer alternatives.
